Do you have any auto recyclers in your area? Not a junk yard but a place where they already have the parts pulled for you.

Theres a place here called Toyota R Us or something like that and they have rows of Toyota engines on shelves. I like them because you don't have to ship, so if you get a crap engine you can just bring it back and exchange it same day.

But he's in Oregon. Pay attention.

There are a couple of places online to buy a used 7M-GE. To be honest, though, don't buy into the "low mileage JDM engine" crap, because it's all BS. I have had so much bad luck with those engines it isn't even funny. Every one I ever got ended up BHGing and telling knock-knock jokes.

Find a good, reputable recycler who checks their engines before they sell them. Make sure you get a good warranty. Replace all the seals (cam, crank, rear main) and timing belt stuff. Use a new water pump and thermostat. If a hose looks mediocre, replace it.

Lastly, and I can not stress this enough, pull the head and check the engine out BEFORE you install it. If you've got one or two somewhat clean pistons and the rest dark, SEND IT BACK. Get the block and head machined, install a MLS headgasket, use ARP hardware, then put it all in.

I didn't say hey you should try Toyota R Us down here in Sacramento. Just used it as an example.

If you cant find anything local I'd go with Ebay and just do a full tear down/rebuild of whatever motor you get.

Then I guess I wasn't paying attention. D'oh. Sorry Bill.

JDM engines are a good deal doe 7mge's.. You just have to inspect before installation..

Its very easy to tear the head off and do a HG job... slap some arps on.. ETC.. doesnt take more then a couple hours because the engine is already out.. JDM engines supply good parts... you just have to do an inspection BEFORE putting it in your car.. if something is wrong with it.. 90% of importers will replace it.

when i threw a rod in mine last year, i found a place on ebay, called japanese engine exchange in canada. the price with shipping ended up being only 600. 350 for the engine, and 250 for the shipping to colorado. and somehow i got them to warrenty evrything they send me. it was a complete engine. alternator, power stearing, a/c, the whole bit. even torque converter. the only bad thing was is that they got mixed up with the differnt 7m's. cressida and supra. i unfortunately got a cressida, and due to that my bottom end was completely shot, i wasn;t able to reuse my supra parts. and there is a thread that i took part in that tells the differnce between the two. the only problem i had was i didn;t wash the cooling system, and all the rust clogged my radiator. but i think with any engine you should do that just cause it might have been sitting for a while. but my mechanic checked out everything except a head gasket, and i've been driving it for a year now, and its still good. i'm just thinking about doing it just for the hell of it though. lol. but if you want, i could find the exact name and number. i haven;t seen them on ebay too often, but for that price compared to everyone else on ebay is cheap, and like i said mine is still strong.

The JDM engine I got looks pretty good but I too noticed rust in the water passages. What would be the best way to flush all that out of there. My motor is out of the car with the head off. I was going to get a gasket kit and reseal every thing.

when i got mine, it was the same way. i ended up taking it to a shop and they cut the hose that comes out of the head, and goes into the heater control. the the 1-1.5 inch heater hose that come at the back of the head, right after the 6th plug, and it bends towards the passanger side. well, they spliced in an adapter that you can get at like home depot, and it fits onto your garden hose, and they unclamped the heater hoses from the radiator, and just power washed it. i don;t know exactly how to do it or if they used any chemicals. i know prestone has cooling system cleaner too, but it took MANY rinses for me to get the green color.

So you ran your JDM with rust in the system like that for a bit?

well when i got it back from my mechanic, the antifreeze was green, but afte i ran it for a while, all the rust started breaking off and it cloged my radiator, and blew under pressure. but i prestone flushed it like three times within the next two days. and got all the big stuff out. but from febuary to july, my collant was the rust color and i just drained it and with every oil change. until i just paid 70 dollars for a complete colling system flush, and its good now.
