Hello all,
I would like to give a breif introduction since this is my first post. I have been dissassembling and playing with a my 86.5 na Supra for a little while now. It had a bad stock HG with 138K on the odometer. Amongst other things going wrong with the car the engine was in suprisingly good shape for a blown HG in my opinion. I have not been registered to these forums for much time, however I have been doing random studies and research(via TSRM, Haynes repair manual, Supraforums.org and other various google results) on how to go about my repairs. I am basically at the point of reassembly with my engine so let me give a breif run down of what I am working with.
I have a Graphite ebay headgasket and gasket rebuild kit(for the top end).
I removed the stock head and decided to order a replacement since my original was in such rough shape. It was not damaged severly, it was just more cost effective to order a remanufactuered head with warranty vs the downtime required in rebuilding/restoring my original head.
I cleaned my block and pistons as best as possible if anyone needs pics I can arrange to have them uploaded(I'm pretty proud of how clean i got everything). I used carb cleaner and scott bright pads to clean the pistons, a gasket scraper to clean the old HG off the block surface, and shop towels/rags to wipe off any excess dirt/fluids from the cleaned surfaces. Oil and coolant were drained prior to engine dissassembly during the initial clean up I popped open the block coolant drain cock to allow any fluids going into the water channels to drain. the oil channels have not been cleaned up thoroughly so I am going to put a little bit of oil into the oil passages and let them drain out prior to installing the new(well remanufactured) head. I have ARP head bolts, no studs since this is an NA build(I couldn't find a valid point in using studs over bolts on this motor). So the biggest concern I have is that I am going to use a Graphite HG and lately all the reading from these forums has told me not to use an MHG if you do not resurface the block. Considering I am not pushing boost through this engine how serious of a problem would this be? I need this car to become of daily driver reliability and I am pretty confident with the amount of hours invested in cleaning everything thus far, I am a bit concerned now since most say not to use the MHG in my situation. Can anyone help me with a logical reason why this is not recommended?
Thanks in advance for any help fellas, I look forward to learning much more from this community.
