For drag racing (at a track!) its better to have an automatic and shift yourself then a 5 speed correct? I enjoy my 5 speed arround town but I would think you could be more consistant with an automatic. If you were in the race for more then fun.

Thanks..

automatic is faster.... 5 spd is more fun.... take your pick :)

I'm doing a 5-spd swap now but i loved my auto. i kept all the wiring and equipment in place as much as I could because one day I'll swap back when I can dump $5k into a tranny, but I'd rather spend that money on body restoration right now.

A/T strictly for drag racing.

Advantages:
- consistent, hard launches from brake torquing (and building boost at the line)
- fast, WOT shifts (not sure about Supras, but may need some type of shift kit for higher line pressure during shifts)
- always in boost down the track
- no missed shifts
- less stress on drivetrain (due to fluid based action of auto tranny)

Disadvantages:
- additional weight
- additional drivetrain loss
- with larger turbos, higher stall torque converter would be needed to build boost at the line
- people saying "oh, it's auto" in a disappointed way :icon_bigg

For a street car, I prefer a manual. And that's coming from experience with both (Talon is A/T, Supra is 5-spd).

Add half as much fun to drive to 97sti's list of auto disadvantages. 5 speed swap is HIGH on my list of priorities. Anybody in Louisville with a 5 speed to sell might want to start thinking of an asking price - it will be within a year...

It depends how fast you are. Most would be faster with a properly built automatic.

If you go domestic, you can get a transbrake. It will spool the turbo, no questions asked.

i have no doubt that auto would be better for drag racing, more consistant and what not. But i only get to race my car 3-4 times a years. But i drive it for 365 days in the year... 5 speed is fun. Plus at the track, you can challange yourself, to make good shifts, launch the car properly, and be consistant. With a 5 speed, all those are in the driver, not the car
