Also, for the record... I myself am an MK3 owner just like you. Hence my screen name here on these forums.
Slowing the WP and the flow of the coolant will allow it to cool better as it flows through the system.
Slowing the WP at higher RPM also helps to reduce cavitation. Take a look at your local race tracks and autocross sessions, you will find a lot of the serious racers using underdrive WP...
A properly designed underdrive WP pulley would actually help you in this department!!!
And thank you for the idea about the idler pulley. We will definitely look into it if there seems to be enough demand.
