    I vote shims as well. When they're beyond clearance, they sound like injectors ticking away, but alot louder.

    I run them. They're a bit stronger than the stock units, and aren't 20+ years old. I haven't heard of anyone ever having trouble with them.

    yup. With the key in the 'on' position, and terminals Fp and +B shorted, you should hear the pump.

    I used a set of gapless rings on my 7mge way back in like '96. Didn't have any problems with them, but I didn't notice any benefit when I installed them, either.

    Good point- having the shop assemble it is nice insurance, though i would say, tearing a head down is nearly more work than tearing a block down.

    Anyway, to actually answer your question, yes, i think $1500 would be enough. Here's my guestimate, assuming you do all disassembly/rebuild: Hone block. 75 Deck block. 100 Polish crank. 75 Check/resize rods 75 Arp head studs. 120 New bearings...
