SG: When a bearing fails and overheats it loses it's crush (ends pull in towards each other) The difference in size is the actual thickness of the shell this makes the beaing ID match the crank pin = 0.001" ish.
The shell should be a snap fit into it's rod or block (this is part of the crush...

I ran the 3.5 to just about the trans crossmember and I think 4" there will severly limit ground clearance as this is the first point of contact for me.
I went up to -10 fittings and hose as the way mine is plumbed uses a lot of 90 degree bends but I used to run it in the same configuration using -8 with no problems.
