Back pressure is a myth, there is only velocity and scavenging effects.
Getting rid of the cat wouldn't help the issue, not to mention you're needlessly polluting.
What kind of clutch are you running?
Most of those on/off clutches really aren't on/off, they just take a LOT of time to break in and for you to teach your left foot how to be gentle.
If you get one of those nifty handheld infared temp guns you can look for spots in the radiator that aren't working (will appear cold).
If in doubt, radiators are cheap....
If you're N/A, the parts store fan clutch is probably fine.
If you switch to the turbo fan, you'll need the turbo fan clutch as well, but the parts stores only carry one for both while toyota has two different clutches.

Not really "lean" but EGR raises the knock threshhold. The ECU is tuned for the EGR to be there...
I'm thinking timing map is what is different, but I could be wrong...

The other thing to look at is the staggered wheel setup and the fact that have a high wing that may be heavy enough to cause issues.
Way too many variables.
The only speculation I have about why they don't make the rear bar that much stiffer on the MKIII is because of the known issues with tearing the tabs off the control arms...
