I should have taken pics of my manifold gasket before I put it on... Completely different construction and it's not a fiber sandwiched between metal that can easily blow out. O2 sensor gasket is also made that way.

Great, I gotta explain that comment. The owner's manual to cars that old have how to fix and/or rebuild everything (and came with the tools!). Since cars were so unreliable, it was expected to do your own repairs...
