The differential casing is definitely good old cast iron. Those threads are made for the plug to be removed on a regular basis as a regular maintenance item.

The M block has a different mounting bolt pattern from the JZ block, so you can't bolt the auto tranny from one onto the other. With a manual transmission, you can swap the bell housings, but I don't think that you can do that with the autos. The transmission itself is probably the same.
