No need for pipe, that is what the dowel pins are for, is to line up the head. I just ment that it is hard to set that heavy head down onto the block in the perfect place the first time, without slaping things around when using head bolts.

In general, you want your lapping plate to be softer than the material being lapped. This way, the charge stays in the lapper, and not the item being lapped. I am pleased to hear you got that glass to work. With glass, sometimes you end up lapping the glass and not the head.

I did not mean to say you need to machine the precision plate, I ment that it would be hard to buy another piece of cast iron, and then have it machined, to make your own plate, for any less money, then just buying the precision plate.

It would be hard to buy the cast and have it machined true for less money. You will not do too bad at that price. Diamond paste is nice, but for cost, I like emery flour, crisco, and gasoline. And I am not baking flamable cookies either!

the reason no one sells a complete kit, is because no one every buys a pre determained kit. most everyone has a type or brand of gasket they like, choice of head bolts or head studs, oem misc. gaskets or aftermarket. They piece together a full kit from many choices.
