Shop is trying to rob you. You can get a set at any local parts store for under $100. Don't recal the OEM pricing but be assured it is probably higher. Easy install as well 3 bolts and a castle nut on each side. But you will need an alignment after install.

What goes bad...like all cars anything and everything can go bad... To answer your question properly symptoms would be nice. When you turn the key does it try to start, does it just make a click noise, or no noise at all? Has the car been sitting for a while? No start could be battery...

Hmmm I'm 6'1" and a miata is unbearable.... I have to drive all kinds of cars where I work and a Miata ranks in my top 10 list of cars that literaly hurt to drive...worst was a lotus elise.

Yup 1-2 in the fan shroud infront of the alternator and ac compressor and one pusher on the condensor out front.
