Do they fall apart? No, they don't, but they do wear. With wear comes larger margins. With larger margins comes more bypass. The more bypass you have, the lower oil pressure you make which leads to rod knock (hense 0 oil pressure followed by rod knock). But use your old pump, it doesn't...

Admittedly, the AVC-R takes a little time to learn. A week or two, but with its' fuzzy logic, it rocks. Playing with the duty cycle reduces spool quite a bit. There's quite a few more features, you should read up on them (and the other EBC's) before making you decision. I don't sell them...
