Simple really. Unless you dump 2-4k into an A430, it just cannot handle much above 350rwhp reliably. It's not a strong tranny, by any stretch of the imagination, unless you dump an assload of cash into it. Also, they shift as slow as a Dodge Reliant's auto, so that's more undue stress put on...

The turbo & N/A trannys are different. The turbo trannys have one additional steel plate & friction plate in the 2nd & O/D brakes. They are a little beefier, but still very fragile.

Buy a clip unless you're going to upgrade right off the bat. Buying a 1J swap in pieces will cost a lot more than buying a clip.

That's exactly what I'm doing. I have a rebuilt R154 already, so I'm buying a R154 clip, swaping the bellhousings & then selling a 7M 5-speed swap to recover a lot of the cost ($550ish). When all is said and done, my clip will cost around $2200

I thought the soarer came with a mid sump, so I thought you had to swap the oil pans to a rear sump to use the soarer 1J in a supra....
