Seems to me a full set of shadow grey, not including seats is around $1000 in average condition. More if it's pristine. And again, that doesn't include the seats so throw in another grand for getting those recovered.
I'm not too afraid of regretting it, but that's a possibility. I've done a lot of little stuff to the chassis (lighting, wiring, alarm, etc...) that would be a pain to do again to another mk3, but nothing too huge.
I love that I know the car so well. I know where everything goes, what can go...
GC89: thanks for the comments. I've held onto the Supra (and still might forever, haha) for this long because it IS a lot of car for the $$. I still think it's about the best bang for $ out there. I wouldn't be looking at an STI or EVO though. I'm eyeing the E39 M5s, ideally supercharged...
By actuator do you mean the wastegate? If so, I always use the weakest spring at my disposal and control the boost with a controller. If that's what you're referring to, then use stock.
IMO, if you're using a controller (mechanical or electronic) you should not be using a stiffer spring. The...
1. The head should be resurfaced almost always. Unless you know its history and you know it was resurfaced recently (a few thousand miles or a few months of usage) you should plan on a resurface. The TSRM calls out flatness specs, but says to replace the head once it's at that point. The only...
Update.
I got the windshield replaced shortly after I got the new trim installed. The professional installer got it to look WAY nicer than I could. Having a clean slate with a new windshield and using adhesive makes it way easier apparently. He used all the correct clips and such. The...
Nick might be able to shine some light on that aspect. I have been meaning to call the local dealer and see what they do and what they charge to do regular "maintenance" on airbags. The manual states to have it inspected every 2 years once it's ten years old, IIRC.
I have 2 heads in my garage I can check. They both suffered a BHG at some point, one was very soft. I expect you'd see a big difference in the diameter of the hole at the top and bottom if this was a significant source of the BHG phenomenon.
As IJ has said though.. once the head is soft it's...
Thanks for the link. I've seen the thread, but hadn't read through everything. I can see how that would help, especially with annealed heads (most all 7Ms by now...). I think that's a bigger issue above 500 whp, but may still be beneficial for lower power builds.
I guess OP here is near that...
The FCD for the 7M is a really bad way to avoid Fuel Cut. I'm sure the 1JZ FCD is similar if not exactly the same. For the 7M the FCD "hides" signals from the AFM to trick the ECU into thinking it's not quite at Fuel Cut level air flow. My understanding is that this inhibits your ability to tune...
I know the auto is a limitation of power at some point because it can only hold so much torque. I'm not sure where that point is.
For a retorque, unless you just did a HG job, I'm not opinionated either way. Tightening is probably worthwhile, just be sure to follow the OEM torque sequence...
Absolutely you should get the airbag(s) working. It's a life-saving advent that was quickly made a legal requirement for a reason.
Talk to an EMT, firefighter, police officer, etc... if you need any convincing there.
I don't think the sensors or computer are heavy. It seems foolish to remove...
Well, standard drivetrain losses are 15-25% and I'm sure the motor was worn at least a little bit. 170whp seems about right, unfortunately. Thankfully, you can up that quite a bit with just a boost controller. ;-)
There a thread on here about dyno results. You can get a feel for what's possible...
I have aftermarket stereos in both my mk3 Supra and Land Cruiser. They both have sub "pre-outs" with the full control you're talking about.
If you are trying to use a sub with a stereo that doesn't have a sub pre out, you will need "high level" or "speaker level" inputs on the amp that you will...
The subwoofer will make the biggest difference in overall sound quality. Without a sub woofer you're just never going to get the full range of sound. The factory speakers can only produce 75% of the music or something like that. I recently put an alpine 8" sub in my Land Cruiser and even with...
Is there any possibility the tires are a contributor? Out of balance perhaps?
Have you had the driveshaft balanced in terms of mass? If originally balanced, have you had it checked again? Even with no runout it could be out of balance simply due to slight variation in the wall thickness of the...
It's funny that to most people in the actual Supra scene that car is sort of just a joke. N/A, with fake Nitrous and huge body kit... and yet it's responsible, at least in part, for a tremendous boost (pun intended) in value of the mkiv as a whole.
Agreed with the mounts. Engine mounts can be completely torn and non-functional, but can look fine. When I've pulled engines on high mileage cars they've been consistently ripped or torn, but I didn't know it until I started lifting the engine.
I should really get around to replacing my trans...
I have the impression solid motor mounts are just a way to get more vibration for the sake of more vibration. Like, "my car needs to be a little less comfortable. Perhaps solid motor mounts will do the trick!"
Is that sort of your experience with them?
