I don't think your valves need adjustment. If you saw exhaust coming out, then you need to replace the exhaust manifold gasket. The reason the tick went away and came back, is because the exhaust manifold stud will slowly pull out, and everytime you tighten the nuts, it makes it worse, until...
Check your exhaust manifold again...rev the engine while in the engine compartment, you should be able to see exhaust coming from the leak, if it's as bad as you say...or at least smell it.
And yes, the stock injectors make a loud ticking sound, but the sound is quite different compared to...
The rubber bands are the WORST. I couldn't wear them for very long, wearing them drove me insane, and I couldn't concentrate on anything.
And no, I haven't been wearing my retainer, but my orthodontist said she was surprised at how they hadn't drifted very much at all. :D
That's a really nice looking Supra. Don't sell it just yet, it should be pretty easy to get it started once you figure out what the problem is. Check your code, and you will know.
BTW, if you want to make it reliable, replace EVERYTHING with dealer parts.
Just make sure you plug all of the oil passages, and flush the oil at least twice before you start the car...then once it is started, only run it for a minute, then change oil again.
