Check that your anti-rattle springs are all in place...and put brake quiet on the backs of the pads...should be fine. Or you could have gone through you pads already...but that seems unlikely. You really just need to take the caliper off and inspect everything.

Mine has a ton of play and squeaks sometimes...it also has a ton of resistance, you have to push it really hard to move it, and it doesn't move smoothly...I've been thinking about replacing the whole assembly as well as the cable for a while.

It is enough. If it doesn't seal with only the o-ring, then the sealing surfaces on the housing or water neck are pitted/erroded, and need to be replaced. That said, I have only an o-ring on my car, and it seals just fine.
