As chevyeater put it, a T78 will spool "late" (4500) to some people. It is by today's standard "old" technology. If its cheap, get it. You could always resell it. If you do get it, I get your old turbo btw. :-)

Possibly front cam seals. If they leak, they can hit the fan and then go every where. Also, if you have a BOV venting to atmosphere and a intercooler that is full of oil, you just found your problem.
