A catch can will help but not solve the underlying problem.
If the turbo has shaft play or a ton of miles, thats most likely your problem.
A BHG will smoke most all the time, bright white and smell like cotton candy out the back.
A set of blown valve stem seals will only smoke on...
If its a bone stock wrx and you actually have those mods with about 12-14psi you'll wax him no problem even if he jumps you off the line.
If he has exhaust and intake and a boost controller, you're toast untill 80mph... thats when you will start reeling him in.
Just fyi, alot of guys hate...
Possibly a moisture problem with an electircal plug, but Im guessing its fuel.
A cold engine takes ALOT of fuel to start. I have worked with stand alone maps before and you would be amazed how much fuel it takes to start and engine, and how little it takes to keep one running at idle...
Quite the old racer's trick... stick the very tip of your tongue to your finger with fluid on it.

Sounds to me like your turbo front seal is shot.
Its sucking oil right out of the turbo or...
Your PCV system is on the fritz and sucking way tooo much vapor.
What shaeff said to a degree... just don't touch the screw. IT will adjust the idle, but it will be an adjustment you regret.
Sounds like you have a vacuum leak, low coolant level, or your timing has come undone.
