Personally, I'd go with the SC, simply for the reason that I don't have one, and have never done one up before. Mk3's are getting kinda too familiar to me after 6 years of working on/around them. Not to say I dislike them or would say to NOT do the Mk3, just stating my need for something fresh.

I don't think you'll find much of that in the Mk3 world aside from the occasional Motec cluster setups... Unless you're looking for something like Hommer's. :puke:

Razoe, for the reasons you listed above, my Mk2 is pretty much 100% stock. It's also 100% slow, but that doesn't bother me. I know that if I need it to, it will get me around if for some reason the Mk3 decides to not cooperate.

If this is a 7m, I always found it easy to get the filter from behind the passenger side engine mount, reach up, and you should have a good shot at it easy enough. Dunno about 2j's, but 1j's are a bit of a pain in their stock form to get at with all the steering crap in the way. As for...

Definitely do your homework on shopping with SS these days (there are plenty of threads to be found on that subject), I personally try to stick to vendors on Supramania here or HPF.
