Themes can sometimes help, something like 'Royale Remixed' (which is what i'm using), is very easy on the eyes. Also, change white backgrounds to ever so slightly grey (from 255 255 255 to 240 240 240 is enough for me). Desktop pictures...try and make them dark, or just use a shade of dark...
