When you turn off the car, do you hear a sound from the idle control valve a second later?
I describe the sound as....'Ducka-ducka-duck". That's the valve resetting.
My only other guess would be Marlin Crawler, since they rebuild those things constantly.
Oh- PS: Aren't the GM AR-5 transmissions quite similar? Just a thought.
Although these cars dont have lifters, the TSRM does refer to the buckets as 'lifters'. Thats why i didnt bust your chops about it.
And yes- exhaust leak can definitely sound like valvetrain noise. As for taking a grinder to the rotors...
If the engine was cold and the power was disconnected for more than a minute, the ecu most likely did reset. It'll run better after the first few minutes of operation.
As for the lifetime filter...
The part at the edges that you can see through is more or less clean. The rest of it (most of it) is caked with dirt. Not saying that this is your issue.
Just saying that the "lifetime" thing is questionable.
I'm pretty sure that the problem people have been having is spark breakup, which(to me) feels like losing a cylinder or two/ sputtering.
Fuel cut is like driving over a parking block at 40mph.
