Gas is a damn sight more volatile than Kero Nick, I'd assume someone doing this would be smart enough to do it outdoors with no ignition sources nearby but after reading your post I'm not so sure ;)

Doubt that a dunking would kill it, electronics are fairly well sealed.

Up to you, only thing I can see it actually doing is a Drain for slung Oil off the front of the Cams, it's not ventilating anything as both the Cam cover and Crankcase are at the same pressure due to all of the internal passages.
It was actually done to fill in the Old Distributor hole in the Block ;)
How on earth would a Vent between the Cam cover and the Block relieve pressure?

It "should" be perfectly uniform top to bottom, looks to be some lows left and maybe someone has yanked the stones out towards the end of the last pass.
Also it should have had the Timing Tensioner torqued in place before honing.
