well i was wondering, since my turbo is on for a rebuild, just a stock ct, but would opening up the stock elbow get messed up? i know there is a few places that sells aftermarket elbow that has it wide open, but since im not working and im always free, i thought it would be ok to take a dremel...

if i had to guess the bearing is no good, bearings can whine when they are junk, like kai said could use a rebuilt right now, if you look thro his link that he posted, theres pics and theres a bearing, and that could cause your problem. also would you be able to post a video of how it sounds?

are you getting mixed up with the PS pump? those do make noises if theres low oil, or no oil at all, just giving that out before you start buying stuff, would be good if you have a automotive stethoscope to find out where the noise is coming from.

i had a noise some what like that, and it turned out to be the support bearing on my supra, it was a 5spd N/A, the bearing was shot, and kept rubbing on the metal, it did it even worse when taking turns, i would take the shaft out and inspect it.

when you did the compression test, was the motor cold? i forgot where i seen this but could have been on SF, but a guy with a MK3 did a compression test when it was cold and got low numbers, so he warmed it up, and then got higher numbers, but i wouldnt want you to take the risk of doing more...
