Yeah, any exhaust pointed directly at the ground will sound louder. All those sound waves are just bouncing off the ground and reverberating in the car.
It makes a difference with fluid dynamics.
Similar to what Seth was mentioning.
You have dynamic velocities occurring within the exhaust as well as thermal dynamics. Keeping these dynamics separate is the only sure way to know you're avoiding any minimal restrictions/turbulence.

I'm going to change out the IC pipes and throttle body, then re-dyno at about 27-30psi and try to break 680hp or so, then if all hangs...
