Core plugs are different than freeze plugs. Maybe you had your terms mixed up.

Your auto teacher IS wrong. And the technical term is "expansion plug" but most commonly called a freeze plug.

What what??? That's how they work. They were put in at the factory and are designed to "pop out" if there is too much water than coolant. Expansion and Contraction my friend.
