Well you might want to look into a new distributor. I had had issues with stalling when mine was on it's way out. Also, there is a plug that connects to the distributor that has exposed wires that can corrode over time check them out. Not saying that's the issue but you could look into it. Also...
What do you mean by play with the distributor? There's a little notch on the side of the distributor where you put a bolt through to tighten it to the head if that's what you mean.
You're going to want to shield the wires on that plug from the elements. They deteriorate right at the plug over time and you're going to have one hell of a time with the car stalling out on random occasions. I had to completely replace my connector with another. Just a precaution.
Have you checked the AFM? There is a spring in the AFM that has broken on me before which doesn't allow the little meter inside to open according to idle. Take it off and if the gate is stuck closed or doesn't have a springy feel to it that could be the problem. Also check for codes.
