IIRC align boring the cam journals is also critical after you machine a head like that. What you end up with is a banana shaped cam journal alignment with a flat bottom if you don't.

Will probably be easier with the engine running (or, only one pump on the pedal) so that the booster is working and giving you maximum line pressure. No need to be wimpy on the pedal either, remember when you really need to stop you're putting a tremendous amount of pressure on it.
