I have NFI about HG problems with Nissans, this is a supra forum ;).
The supra has a cast iron block and AL head, along with a stock composite HG. That's what my reference was too :D
The stock boost gauge is hella slow, don't use that as a reference. Since you're nearly stock, you probably won't be able to hear the turbo spool much. A full flowing Downpipe will work wonders on the car, the stock turbo elbow is a massive restriction if there ever was one.
Yes, it's pretty normal to have a hot, heat soaked engine bay, especially on turbo models.
Some ways to combat this are to:
open up exhaust restrictions.
Ceramic coat your exahust parts, wrap them too.
Do the same for your heat shields.
Vented hood/headlights.
More lean???
I'm talking about how his old tune most likely was sense he's talking about his rich mixture now since he has better injectors and a better turbo.
