Banged resuvoir light still on.
Did not adjust cps but did a long drawn out 15 second crank and it started slowly... then stabilized.
No codes.
Going to take her out for test drive #2 and see if anything had changed.
I got her started with an old alternator I cleaned up and she started right up.
Birdcage light on regardless of resuvoir filled to full and radiator full + cooling system burped.
Been through about 4-5 full operating temp cycles since engine together, will re torque arp studs before next...
Just for verification I actually used a alt off my old 180k engine that was clogged with caked oil. I spent about 2 hours cleaning with 3 cans of crc electric cleaner, an air compressor and then waited an hour for it to dry. In all honesty it looks better than the previous alt now.
You're right near Kaizen motorsports right? I was there yesterday and they would probably help out, I'm borrowing an igniter from them till Monday. I would explain to them what you've done and where your at and hopefully you can work something out or point you in the right direction?

I just did some research and there are a lot of stories of people having to replace ultima alternators multiple times right out the box. And that pepboys no longer sold the remanned ones because they failed so much.
I'm a little worried about them.

Twas the alternator!!!!! I had the alternator out and so I wrapped the b+ wire in lacquer thinner gloves(thanks to Zumtizzle's advice) and she started up!!!

I took my alt off and the plate in the back along with what looks like the heatsync to see inside and it does look pretty black.

Yeah I'm in the process of removing my upper IM atm to check the loom for burnt wires.
The alt itself could be the problem because the smoke was a strong upward stream at first meaning there had to motion from the part that short...
So there's a short that happens on startup but I can't locate the wire shorting for the life of me.
It happens on startup when the motor is just about to start and then after it will just crank forever.
I see the smoke shoot out behind the alternator in the loom sitting on top the lower...

Alright so I'm aware DM repairs igniters but this waon't be till monday or tuesday i can get it there.
Does anyone personally know how to repair them for not putting out the 12v.
