You should use a timing light to set 10 degrees BTDC. Just attach the light to the battery and the inductive pickup to the 1# spark plug wire. As far as the boost controller it should be counter clockwise to reduce boost pressure.

Take your brakes off and check them. Or jack the car up turn, the wheels to the left and spin each tire while under them. Figure out which side (or both) are making the noise and pinpoint it to something. I'm guessing brakes, or a hose dangling somewhere.
