If you have large noticeable backlash, your pinion crush sleeve is shot.
Which is also allowing excessive amounts of pinion shaft radial play, explains your excessive heat and bearing howl.
A solid rebuild IS a full rebuild, this isn't a job...

I wouldn't trust a reman karman vortex AFM, but that's just me. YMMV
My 87' original AFM has 170k on it with no issues yet, I would just get a used one.
Its a gamble getting used of course, if someone ruined one with MAF cleaner or...
KYB Excel-G are not TEMS adjustable.

What are they trying to pull on you, there are no Monroe shock that function with the TEMS.
Sure they are "compatible", only in the fact that they fit in the same place as the originals.

Tokico has limited supply of the TEMS capable shocks.
They seem to send over shipments in batches.

I have had a few very stubborn stub shafts on a few I rebuilt.
Even on the bench it sometimes takes the largest slide hammer I have & some serious effort to get the clip to let go.
Sounds like you may have a tough one too.
Probably a good idea to pull it out and do it on the bench.
