The $2008 Grassroots challenge build-up thread

We would love to get our hands on some fiberglass parts, as far as laying them ourselves it's a different story. I dunno about my teammates, but I don't have any experience laying zee fibre-glahs... A fiberglass hood would definitely help, and would hurt a lot less when it falls on the head...

Thanks guys! We're currently kicking around ideas for this year. What we still want/need to do, etc. I just saw the April issue myself, and I smiled a lot, haha. I'm constantly looking for tires but I just can't seem to ever find a good deal! For now the car is going to get de-stickered...

    "Illegal Exhaust" In Virginia

What kind of exhaust setup do you have right now? Do you have a visible muffler? I got a noise ticket here in Va in my AllTrac a while ago. I went to court, told the judge that there was a leak in my exhaust but I had since fixed it. They dropped the charge. From what I understand, It's not the...

Anyone's bad cat converter ever allow high NOx?

high nox is a result of high cylinder temperatures. over-advanced timing, lean a/f mixtures, etc. how long are you waiting in line to get your car on the rollers at the emissions test facility? usually when you sit idling for long periods of time, the cat can cool off and literally not do its...

    camshaft/head stud question

im pretty sure he's not dumb enough to grind his cams down while they're still in the head. I think he's asking for future reference, if he removes them this one last time and grinds them. Im not for grinding the cams, not because balance is an issue (think of how many cam caps there are) but it...

Welding on the stock intake manifold?

You can certainly MIG aluminum, but I don't think it would be the best choice for a manifold. Mainly because you need a fairly industrial machine to get the job done right. Yes you can do it with a Lincoln setup from Home Depot or something, but you aren't gonna be able to get the heat you need...

Welding on the stock intake manifold?

The biggest difference you are going to see between the stainless and the aluminum, is that when running stainless, the puddle is generally much smaller and can be kind of "sticky" if you aren't careful where you dip your filler. Thats really the only word I can use to describe it, I'm sure you...

youve got valid points poodles. but we've seen what the MS can do and we're willing to roll with it. Again, this is a track car, down time isnt a big deal to us. I personally would rather write my own map than have to deal with the little tuning ability gained with an SAFC. We've removed all...

Running an open BIC Down pipe

our race car has been open BIC DDP since we put it on. no problems here. it's just really, really loud.. we've dragged it and autox'ed it w/o any problems. if youre only doing it for a few days, you shouldnt have any issues, just dont use it as a long term solution.

Cage is finshed and the chassis work is almost done.

Where the hell did you find tubing so cheap??? I've seen $5 something/foot at the cheapest. I'll take some!

Cage is finshed and the chassis work is almost done.

Lookin good! having just put the cage in our grassroots supra, I can appreciate all the work that goes into it. One issue that I did run into though, was head room. Especially with that front Halo bar. I located ours just behind the targa top clamps, only because I ran out of tubing to make it...

No rain over here, haha. We do appreciate the insight guys. This being our first Supra I have no doubt there is still a lot for us to learn. The thing with the wire tuck and MegaSquirt is... we want to be a serious contender next year. Yes MS can be difficult, yes a wire tuck can make stuff...

One of us is really good with electrical, in fact, Ive yet to find an electrical issue in any car that I couldnt solve. Wiring is by far my forte. That being said, the MS system costs as much or less than the 'tried and true methods' yet boasts several more features. Afterall, it is a...

We had a blast! At least for myself(Avi), I can say it's the most fun I have ever had at ANY motorsports event. I think the thing that really made if fun, was that everybody was on the same level. You know how at any given event, there are the newbz who spent $5000 prepping their race car, and...

How rare are 89-92 Supra Turbo Hardtop 5 speeds?

i know of a mint silver 90 hardtop 5 speed in my area for 1K. It has a spark issue that sounds easy to resolve, but other than that it's sharp. that being said, it's the only hardtop in my area ive seen. LOL.

oh man what a day! Thanks for all the compliments everyone. The car has been a hell of a lot of fun to build and we love being able to drive it finally. We ran out to walmart and got a marine battery box for $7 and that got us through tech. Today at the autocross the car handled great and...
