Ha! Was waiting to see if anyone owned their MKIII new back in the eighties.
My 1989 Turbo Targa was bought new in either late 1988 or early 1989. One owner car....me!
The OP should update the first post and list responses in chronological order including mileage. That would be...
Hello Dutch,
Thanks for the compliment! I think it turned out nice as well.
Yes, I have the Stainless Steel Vibrant 1142 resonator along with the Stainless Steel Vibrant 1043 dual tip muffler. I've been happy with the Vibrant quality so far. Cleans up easily and construction appears to...
I prefer the "Q-Ship" approach. <grin> The looks I get after stomping on unsuspecting prey makes keeping the car as close to factory appearances as possible worth it. lol
I wanted as quiet a system as possible, but without compromising flow. This system turned out a bit louder than I was...
Hello John,
Yes, I have HKS cams and 550cc RC injectors. Now that you mention the transitions between accelerating and decelerating the tune does feel way off in that respect. Not very smooth at all IMO.
I'll see if I can get Chris or George (two different local AEM tuners I know) to sit...
Custom 3" downpipe and 3" exhaust back to a Vibrant dual tip muffler. Also used a Vibrant stainless steel V-Band assembly to attach the exhaust to the downpipe. These V-Bands are really nice...
This is all great information and I appreciate the input, but what is my next move?
Adjust my fuel and ignition maps down a bit and try again? What's the harm in bringing them way down just to insure I pass the test? Is there a point where bringing them too far down will cause a fail in...
Yah, I was hoping the car would be old enough to be exempt from the emissions portion of the inspection, but I'm still five years out on that one!
I didn't know you could find/buy a "sniffer - smog analyzer". I think the inspection shop empathizes with me, but I'm not sure they'll let me...
Geesh...how do you and John see a slight misfire with the information I've provided?
So, do you think simply retarding the timing and leaning out the fuel will get the car to pass?
I'm pretty sure I know where/how to retard the ignition, but not so certain about the leaning out the fuel...
Hello,
Here is what my results look like. Thanks for any help with tuning suggestions I might be able to make in order to get this car to pass.
Thanks,
Brad
Hello John,
The motor is the 7MGTE with HKS cams and a Powerhouse Racing fuel rail with 550cc RC injectors. I do have the test results at the office and will post the results later today.
I've decided against the Vibrant round metal core 3" CAT due to its 5" diameter. The less expensive...
Hello,
Does anyone have suggestions or an AEM calibration file I can use to allow my 1989 MKIII to pass emissions?
The car does not have a CAT and I'd rather not go to the expense of adding a CAT at this point. Can it be detuned to the point it will pass emissions? I believe the test...
I'm sure this is a stupid question, but what is typically done with the fuse box and battery? I assume that's where the IC plumbing will be going. I'm not real keen on placing the battery in the hatch unless it can be completely hidden. Anyone have rear battery installations that completely...
Hello,
The shop that installed the ETS kit indicated the amount of material that would be required to be removed from the bezel for it to clear the ETS pipe would probably end up cutting the bezel in half. I looked at it briefly and they're probably about right.
I guess it wouldn't hurt...
Hey Tim,
Yah, the ETS kit has been a disappointment. More so that ETS as a company is a disappointment. It's unfortunate that they built a kit that is 90% ok and then screw up the last 10% so bad that it ruins the kit as a whole.
I can't and haven't been recommending ETS to anyone that...
Yes, I have no problem keeping cool as long as it's less than 100F outside.
What would be the cause of coolant temps reaching beyond 190-200F with a fluidyne radiator, belly pan in place and a 160* TStat at highway cruise with outside temp at 100F?
That is the real question...
Brad
I agree and understand your point regarding running a 160* Tstat with a factory ECU, but in my case I've replaced the factory ECU with an AEM system.
Can you not set the enrichment point lower to better match the TStat?
I didn't do any of the tuning, but it certainly looked like just about...
Correct, it spun really fast at about 6500RPM+ and created enough suction to pull the shroud off the radiator.
After evaluating the cost of a new shroud, fan blade, clutch and AUX fans I decided to try the Flex-a-lite route. So far I've been happier.
Best,
Brad
Hello,
The radiator is a Fluidyne. It was installed by Dynosaur Performance here in Fort Worth. I don't think they had any fitment issues. As far as I was able to tell (while removing what was left of it) the factory shroud bolted right in place.
After the fan clutch locked up and...
Not that I'm all that happy with the ETS system it's only fair to point out it is not one piece like the Lipp. It's upper plumbing much more similar to the HKS kit than the Lipp kit. In fact I still have the HKS "3000" pipe in place with the ETS kit.
The problem with ETS is as a company...
I'd stay away from the ETS kit for the following reasons:
(1) Poor customer support. They pretend like they are concerned if you have a problem, but never act on any resolution.
(2) Passenger headlight will no longer close due to poor ETS plumbing design. I confronted ETS about this...
