Did you check the vacuum hose to the power booster? I know in cars that don't have a power booster the brake pedal can be really hard to press in order to stop the car. I don't mean to make it sound like you don't know what your doing, but did you bleed the brakes in the right order? Starting with the wheel the farthest from the master cylinder (Passenger Rear) and working your way towards the wheel closest to the master cylinder.
