First, does anyone have a good source for OEM or equivalent quality calipers other than Champion, etc.? $300+ per caliper is a little more than I can go right this minute. Second, are the caliper rebuild kits through Champion sufficient to fix at least most of the problems old calipers might...

Do the openings on either end which are blocked with caps have any practical purpose? I was just wondering if there was a reason for the openings or why Toyota designed the plenum that way, and couldn't find any information in the TSRM or by searching the forums.

Somehow I don't think these are normal, but I wanted lots of second opinions before I dump it in the trash and try to round up a new one.
