Replaced the short speedometer cable today which fixed both the speedometer and idle issue.

It actually sounds like a mechanical issue. My speedometer cable has been making squeaky noises for some time, I just couldn't figure out where it was coming from. After testing it again, I can hear the cable squeaks when the speedometer works, but goes silent when the speedometer stops registering.

I had the same symptoms, finally bought a block test which told me to replace the HG. Sounds like you might be getting exhaust in your coolant

I had similar issues. My problem ended up being the a loose plug on the starter. I ran a wire from my batter to the starter plug that comes form the key and she started right up. Tried wiggling connections when it wouldn't start?

I ran a wire from the battery to the brown connector and she started right up. That's when I realized that the problem was that connection was just loose. I had the problem with the previous starter and on the new starter. So I blamed the plug :)
