Hello everyone,

So my name is Sean, I am a soldier in the US Army, a mechanic, stationed in Fort Bragg, NC. I bought a 91' Toyota Supra Turbo MKIII, it is white with blue interior. When I bought it, it had around 280K on it, and he said that it was rebuilt about 30K ago. The PS pump belt was missing, the AC needed to be recharged and the turbo needed to be rebuilt, so he bypassed the turbo and was just using a filter.

When I first got to it.

p1876847_2.jpg

I took it for a test drive and it was amazing. Even without the turbo it was so fast. I revved it up and popped the clutch out of a stop and there she went, broke loose all the way through the corner. I was very excited about it.

Well, wouldn't you know that even with a rebuild it just couldn't last. I was driving it home from Charleston, and made it almost 200 miles. First it was just a tapping. I heard it over the music and immediately stopped. I was hoping and praying that it was valve tap, I could handle that. But for some reason the starter went out as soon as I stopped. Well after adding more oil, and refilling the antifreeze. (I think it burned oil, and overheated, so it drained a bunch of coolant.) Well like I said the starter went out, well there wasn't much I could do about the engine regardless of what it was. So I pushed this 3500 lb car (+ or -) down the side of the highway, and got it push started, it started up and the tap went away. So I was hoping it would make it the last 80 or so miles. Well about 10 miles down the road it started loping and losing power, so I popped it out of gear and it stalled, I coasted for a few seconds, put it back in fifth and slowly pulled the clutch out. As soon as the gear caught, "Clunk, Clunk, POW!" Well that was that, and there I was coasting to a stop as the oil poured out of the pan. I got a body down with his trailer and even then we needed a Highway Patrol to come help push the car up into the trailer. So I got it home and parked it.

p1876847_3.jpg

I put the cover on it, because it rains a lot here.

p1876847_4.jpg

p1876847_5.jpg

I put all my engine parts in the back. To make room for the work. But before I could get to work, I had to clean up the garage and make the room.

p1876847_6.jpg

p1876847_7.jpg

So I spent the day cleaning up while the car sat in front of me teasing me. Yes that is my truck and frame, I was rebuilding it, but now I am working on the car and the truck is put on hold.

Well after the garage was all cleaned up, I got a little bit of work done.

p1876847_18.jpg

I always thought that this was pretty cool.

p1876847_20.jpg

p1876847_21.jpg

I love getting parts in. It is one of the best feelings ever.

p1876847_22.jpg

Well I realized that it took me four hours to take off just the front clip and bumper. Because my tools were so unorganized that I couldn't barely do the work I was constantly looking for the tools. So I decided the next day that I was going to organizing my tools.

p1876847_23.jpg

So then yesterday I finally really got to work. My intention was to get the engine pulled, and I almost got it, but we were having a barbecue and so I got all the way to the engine mounts. It is sitting on just the mounts, with the tranny on a jack, all I have to do today is hook up the lift and pull it. So here you go, the rest of my pictures of what I did.

p1876847_26.jpg

All the oil on the ground came out of the inter-cooler. I was so surprised, I wasn't expecting oil to come out I didn't have the pan ready.

Oil cooler, PS Fluid Cooler, Inter-cooler, Radiator, Condenser...this thing is all about the cooling.

p1876847_31.jpg

The exhaust was a son of a to pull out.

My buddy came over late otherwise, but he still helped out. I was hoping to have him over earlier, to get it pulled but family is family and his wife had stuff to do.

And then once again, at the end of the day as I was cleaning up to go in, the mailman brought me more goodies.

p1876847_46.jpg

The mailman even messed with me and even though she was parked in front of my house, she took all the other packages first just to mess with me because like I said, I love getting packages in the mail. I am waiting for all the goodies to come in so I can completely rebuild the engine, and get it ready to put it.

The engine that I am putting in is the 1UZFE, 4.0 32 Valve DOHC All Aluminum V8, they come out of a Lexus. Mine came out of a 95' SC400. Like I said I am completely rebuilding the motor, so I bought all the parts for that, then I just need to buy the bellhousing and flywheel kit to mount up the R154. Well thanks for reading, I will be posting more tonight after I pull the engine and start cleaning up the bay, also I should be breaking the motor the rest of the way down soon. So watch, hopefully this should be done in a month or two. Wiring and money are gonna be the killers here.

Okay progress report.

I only spent a few hours on sunday working on it. I spent most of the day with the family. As much as I want to work on the car all the time. My family is a priority, I mean I did just get home from Afghanistan two weeks ago. So anyway, after the work I did on Saturday, it was already practically ready to come out. So I hooked up the lift and unbolted the engine mounts. Then it only took me a few minutes to unbolt the small things that were still attached. The fuel lines, a ground cable, the main battery cable to the starter, and the ac hoses. I can't believe I forgot a few of those...lmao

p1877256_1.jpg

So yeah I started the lifting and unbolted everything...

p1877256_2.jpg

If you look on there you can see how I bolted the lift point to the block at the alternator bracket hole.

p1877256_3.jpg

And the other side on one of the manifold bolts.

When the PO rebuilt the motor he must have removed the lifting hooks, so I had to improvise. I was kinda worried at first but it turned out to work okay. So I hooked it up and lifted.

p1877256_4.jpg

p1877256_5.jpg

p1877256_6.jpg

You can't really see it this far away but you will see the hole in a later picture.

p1877256_7.jpg

And the crack on this side.

p1877256_8.jpg

There is a close up of the crack.

p1877256_9.jpg

p1877256_10.jpg

p1877256_11.jpg

And the damage the spinning rod did to the oil pan.

p1877256_12.jpg

The engine in the garage.

p1877256_13.jpg

p1877256_14.jpg

The engine bay is so empty. Of course I have more to take out, and then to clean it up, and I think I might even paint it before I throw the 1UZ in. What do you guys think?

p1877256_15.jpg

Got the tranny disconnected. And by itself. I still have to take off the clutch and bellhousing to prep it for the new stuff once it gets here of course.

The bad engine all by its lonesome. I started taking it apart just to see the extent of the damage. It seems that the block is toast, but the head and everything above the block is good. I didn't pull the crank yet, but from what I can tell, the crank is still in good condition. So I am hoping to sell off everything from the engine that is still good.

p1877256_16.jpg

p1877256_17.jpg

p1877256_18.jpg

So yeah, as you can see the block is done son. So I am probably going to take it to the scrap yard and see how much money I can get for a couple hundred pounds of iron. lmao...

p1877256_19.jpg

On to better things, I got yet another package in today, as I am sitting here writing this. Awesome. Like I said, packages are one of the best parts. So now I almost have everything I need to begin rebuilding the engine.

Well thanks for following this, I hope to have updates as often as possible. So I should have another one in a day or two.

I would definitely paint the engine bay, you wouldn't want to complete the transplant and then decide it's what you would like to do. Take advantage of the motor being pulled and clean it up as much as you can, I know I would. Maybe try hide as many wires as possible on your way if that's the look your after, maybe relocate a few things to get a simple bare engine bay. Nice updates

I'd say go for it and paint it, think of re locating a few thinks like the fuse box and battery, parts like that. I removed everything to do with A/C in my supra and that made a big difference, got rid a some weight too not much but it's something

I actually have been looking into it, I think I am going to relocate as much of the wiring as possible. I want to move the battery to the rear somewhere, and stuff like that, the problem is that I need to have the engine up and running ASAP, so I can't do anything that will take too much time. So I will probably paint it and then throw everything back in...and then work on relocation of everything.

That sounds good, will give you something to do over the long run. What is the condition of the paint and body work in the engine bay? nothing beats fresh paint though... would look good, very bare 1uzfe fresh paint... :bling:

I hope not, I was building my truck when I got the 1UZ bug and so I bought one for the truck but I had to put that project on hold and I needed an engine, so the 1UZ looks as good as any...lmao

I've got nothing but mad love for the 1uz...except when it comes down to changing that starter when it in the car.....What swap kit do you plan on using for the r154 TV8? Quantum auto? ....Looking forward to seeing this build take off.

I actually found another kit that has a custom bellhousing...it is slightly cheaper than the QA kit and there is no modification to the bellhousing afterward...plus since i dont have the 1uz bellhousing i would have to spend even more to get that first...so i am going to buy the bellhousing...now they have a full kit that comes with everything which includes the custom bellhousing, clutch pack, throwout bearing, flywheel, clutch fork and slave cylinder, and the bearings and spacer kit... However i think i will just get the bellhousing and bearing kit and then get a different flywheel and clutch components.

Yeah, that kit is the one from Thailand. So no new updates yet, except for more packages. I would say sadly work is taking up alot of time, however, the time they are taking now is all finishing up last minute stuff so that I can go on leave.

Thanks guys, I am so glad that so many people are on-board. I was really expecting a little hate for it. It's just that there are so many JZ swaps and I wanted something...not totally unique, but definitely uncommon. On top of that, I just LOVE the 1uz...it is so amazing. Plus I love the MKIII, I honestly like it better than the MKIV...of course part of that is the expense...lmao...so yeah thanks guys. Hope I don't disappoint.
