I'll say it, bc I know no one else will.... the Edge from U2. May not be "God" status, but still really good.

For God status I vote for Hendrix & Stevie Ray Vaughn

a buddy of mine put it perfectly; he can speak through his guitar. David Gilmour gets my vote .

Ted Nugent!

Dime Bag Darrell!

Carlos Santana!

Mike has a very nice list, but Slash has got to be on it to legitimize it. My vote goes to Malmsteem on the poll. I like his virtuoso much better than when he has a singer.I have witnessed almost everybody mentioned in this thread. Carlos and Slash are both extremely good. I actually thought Slash was overrated due to the video game craze until I saw him a month or so ago. He is a guitar Genius!

Keep watching past the first bit. Most Knopfler solos take off near the mid-point. ;) I love him because he always makes it look like just some other thing to do, like drinking a glass of milk. LOL.

In conclusion, I don't think there is any one person I could pick. So many people have so much talent, and it really depends how I feel. Some people can really make an instrument come alive.

I don't think there's any one player that's the best, they are all good in their own ways. I personally think vai is amazing for what he can do technique wise and how clean his playing is even live, but my favorite for pure sound that I enjoy listening to most is definitely Slash.
