I've got a seriously oldschool server case - one of the first ones with a removable tray where you installed your mainboard and expansion cards outside the case proper.

It's been getting a little long in the tooth lately, I'm seriously considering picking up one of those new Antec Skeletons. Fits my computer style, I'm constantly screwing with my main PC, and it hasn't had the case sides on it in well over a decade.

Old server cases FTW!

No need for anything over 2GB as it will just cause issues on a 32bit operating system. 4GB you will need a 64-bit operating system.

Fixed ;)

Tanya, the 2000 series ATIs run very warm. If you upgrade, get a 4000 series ;)

How would I know if I had a 32 or 64 bit operating system?

The only reason I want 4GB is that I use photoshop and illustrator constantly and they hog the hell out of everything. My PC was originally only 512, so upgrading to 1GB helped a little bit, but not enough.

I am running 4GB no problem...I also run AutoCAD and Photoshop on my gaming computer. My comp actually has 8GB but 4GBis turned off until like 60% mem is being used and during gaming. Kind of cool.

what do you have that allocates the extra memory? a software feature or the motherboard. I thought windows xp couldnt run more than 3gb? and you probably have a 32 bit OS, or it would say windows XP 64 or something like that. kind of easy to spot. Regular xp is 32 bit

I am running a detuned Windows Vista with some interesting applications.

The mem software goes with my MoBo's ASUS applications. Kinda cool.

Tanya,
Go into your Virtual Memory settings and hard-set your swapfile to 3x the size of your physical RAM. (change the min and max values to that spec) So if you have a gig of memory, you'll want a 3gig swapfile. I wouldn't use the swapfile for more than 2gigs of physical RAM though...so basically, if you ever upgrade to Vista or something and you no longer have the memory cap...lol.

Isn't going to Vista a downgrade? :sarcasm:

I have no intention of going to Vista, my XP works just fine, as archaic as it is nowadays. I like my old ass PC.

3x swap file? That's freaking ridiculous!

Tanya, open up your task manager, go to your performance tab, and see what kind of swap file you have when running full tilt.

With 1GB of ram, I find in the order of 1.5GB Swap is the biggest needed.

Also, 32bit Windows WILL see 4GB of ram. YOU (the end user) will not.

Tanya, 64 processes running? Really? You need to trim some of that! That's where your ram is getting used up.

PM me a screenshot of task manager with all of your processes listed, and I'll tell you how and where to cut them down :)

And people wonder why I like server running a server OS. This is my sloppy startup, not my streamlined gaming startup:
