Check your grounds to, I just had the same thing happen, I had a bad Tranny to chassis ground. thought it was the starter so i replace the contacts and cleaned every thing up. and nothing, turned out to be a bad ground. Im glad it wouldent start because i dont like fires!

the end link should be able to support a lot of stress. The only reason for it to break would be because it is not aliened correctly or it is in a bind. I made my own end links using some 4130 chromoly Round stock and bored out the center and taped the ends for heim joints
