I'm finishing a motor swap in my 87. i'm putting in a jdm motor and i have found a few odds and ends about 5 to be exact, that dont seem to have a home. not sure what the year of the donor motor is buti'm sure its newer than the 87, it was swapped into an 89 so its in the air. the motor that was in my car was a 92 7mge, if that helps. any scematics?

Swap over the electronics from the previous engine and save yourself a whole mess of trouble and headache?

I don't follow as to what's been swapped where either. You've got an '87 with an '89 going in to replace the '92? One what version wiring harness? That's the number one question. If you don't know swap all the electronics over so you're not confused and don't find yourself hacking together a functional harness. Pre89 and post89 harnesses had a number of different connectors and a few other changes.

the car is an 87 turbo. the turbo motor was removed and a 92 cressi n/a t was put in before i got it. now i'm putting a motor from an 89, but i dont know what year the motor is due to it was a jdm swap

If the plugs for the ECU at the end of the engine harness are yellow it's pre89.. If they're gray it's post89.

the old motor (92) were yellow. the donor motor's are grey. is there a differance cuz i have everything plugged in that has a home, and i thought i was done with the motor part of the swap besides oil' antifreeze, brake fluid, and attaching the drive line. but i turn the key and just hear a relay inside the car below the ecu click and one just outside of the car in the bay same side. what do i need to check?

a 92 will not have yellow plugs. IIRC the pinouts from the ECU are different between 86.5-89.5 (the yellow plugs) and 89.5+ (grey plugs) model years. If your ECU is pre 89 and your harness is post 89 it isnt going to work.

thank you i've been clawing at my brain for two days! ... almost want to say love you

one more thing, the motor came with the grey post 89 clips, but one of the clips is broken, the ecu is yellow pre 89 clip, if i get the pre 89 harness will it plug right up to the motor or will i be swapping parts for two more days?

Heh, that's what I had tried to explain... :icon_razz They both use some different parts and different clips for others. You need to either swap ECU's (although I don't know if that would be all, never been through it myself) or you'll need to swap the relevant electronics.

Off the top of my head some of the differences include the injectors and the resistor pack and the distributor.

Why not just swap over the ECU, engine harness and sensors from the setup you were already running?

But yes, you want to match the ECU, wiring harness and some of the electronics (same version, pre89 to pre89 and post89 to post89).
