what causes detonation?

maybe this has been covered before but i couldn't find it. what are all the things that cause detonation? it never does this unless im under higher boost range.
my car is a 3rd gen 1ggte its stock 11psi when i get on it and get close to 9psi it will start detonating like crazy. i have adjusted the timing like 10 times and its right at -10.
what else can i do?

pull the motor out and replace the headgasket and inspect it for other damage because its probably toats if youve really detonated on it.

clogged fuel injectors, failing fuel pumps. those things can also cause detonation.

Also if you have to pull the motor anyway put a 1jz or 7mgte in the 1ggte is just not worth the hassle.

At least one of the cylinders is running too lean, if it's not the timing.. or a damaged/carbon-filled combustion chamber. assuming thats not too much boost for the octane you're running.

I wonder what kind of highway mileage you could manage with a 1g-gte and a standalone..

well before anyone diagnoses detonation, what makes you 100% sure its detonation... the cardinal rule of diagnosis is :
#1 Verify the complaint.

Could you better describe the symptoms?
