As of 2025, Queensland are the overall men's series leaders, standing at 25 wins to New South Wales' 14, having enjoyed recent dominance with the exception of 2014 and 2025. Since 2003, the men's player of the series has been awarded to Wally Lewis, and Queensland's Cameron Smith is currently the record holder for medals.
In 2025, what was previously known as the Women’s Interstate Challenge, became the Women’s State of Origin. New South Wales beat Queensland 16 - 10 in the inaugural single match held at the North Sydney Oval.
In the late 1970s, the State of Origin came into conception as a result of the diminishing relevance of the interstate Rugby League. Players are selected on the basis of the state of their origin, not current state of residence. The State of Origin Shield has now traversed borders with both states enjoying successes.

Backyard training - Just because you can’t get to a match, doesn’t mean you can’t take part in the State of Origin 2025! Some simple rugby skills that children might like to practise in their backyards include passing and kicking. All you need is a ball, and some space! This is something children can do alone, or with their siblings. Simply stand about five metres from a wall, and throw the ball to a point on the wall, whilst allowing it to bounce back so that children can practise catching.
Warming up - For any budding Rugby Leaguer, the warm-up is the most important first step. Warm-ups aim to prepare players for peak performance and to reduce injury. The warm-up should last approximately fifteen minutes. Children can start with something low intensity such as gentle jogging on the spot, and gradually progress through a series of movements up to a higher-intensity level. Warm-ups help to prepare children’s muscles and joints ready to play a match. As their body temperature is elevated, this allows for more elasticity in movements. Warm-ups are also great for preparing children’s minds for work too!
Make your own 'Blues' rugby shirts - For this activity, all you will need is some paper or cardboard, some colouring pencils and a pair of scissors. Have a gander at the 'Blues' rugby shirts by doing an internet search. Once you have a template for viewing, children can use their creative licence to make their very own version of the design.
