you can buy R-12 on ebay, just get one of those big canisters with like 50lb or whatever.... sure it's like $300-500 but you only use like $20-40 worth... use a little bit and re-sell it again on ebay... just tell them how much it had and how much you used... and that's it...

Here I found that RS-24 is a legal substitute for R12, here in the USA.

http://www.epa.gov/ozone/snap/refrigerants/lists/mvacs.html

I've never seen it for sale. I read elsewhere that it is not as cold as R134a. But that it is a direct replacement for R12, with no converting needed.

I converted to R134a 3 yrs ago with no ill effects, and it blows 40* out the center vent before the compressor cycles off, and 45* when it comes back on.

I stay nice and cool here in the desert all summer. R134a costs about $9 lb now, by the can. $4 lb by the 30 lb tank.

Isnt R12 still banned there though? Or is R12A a CFC free variant?

It's not banned, it's just not available for public sale unless you are certified in dealing with it. Thats why any shop can put it in your car.

If I was certified it would cost me $16/pound for r12, luckily my manager is and can get it for me.
