how do you get the shims in and out of valve buckets?, i had them off and looked at them and they were in pretty snug, did you just pry them out with a screwdriver or knock them out from bottom? i was thinking just pulling out the bucket and shim together and moving those arround untill i actually needed a new shim.

and how do you get them back in? im extremely paranoid of them just falling out during a 4k rpm run or something.

that seams like hte hardest part to me.

ya got any shims left over?? im trying to collect a good amount before i do mine so i can just have them handy instead of stopping the project for a day to find a shim.

I think it was Grim who wanted to start a shim bank, but it could have been anyone here. It would be a cool idea to have so we could get cheap shims. BTW it's to my knowledge the shims pop out with a small screwdriver's aid. My machinist said the yare held with glue, but I don't know about that for sure, since they look like they could be held simply by the tightness of the bucket around the shim.

Well, here's an alternative for some of your shims. If the space is spaller than tsrm reccomends, then you can cut the top of the valve stem instead of getting a smaller shim. Or, why not try shimless buckets? One piece, no worry of anything spitting out at high rpm.

Good job on the worksheet. I made one also with Excel when I did my head and my valves. Mine worked wonders and saved me a crapload of trial and error time.

Anybody have a link for a tool to put the valves back in, my pvc tool got busted and I dont have a lathe anymore. Also does anybody have the parts number for the Yamaha shims?

It isnt that hard to do if you have the correct tools. There is two you need until you are good at it. The repair manual probably has the SST number. It is a odd shaped pliar that you grab the cam with and turn. Then there is a 5 inch piece of metal with the ends that have an edge cut on them. The edge is placed on the edge of the bucket under the shim, and it holds the bucket in place. A magnetic tool pulls the shim out. Check your clearance when the engine is stone cold first of course.

I've seen two talked about.
One is a pvc type:

...making a tool from scratch with PVC pipe is a breeze. It can be seen in the pictures below right before it was used. Note that it is comprised of two parts. One 3/4" diameter section is a simple sleeve that fits down inside the bore(and around the spring). Inside of that is a 1/2" diameter plunger type piece with a handle to press down on the spring. An access hole has been cut in both pieces so that the keepers are easier to install and remove. FYI: Know that the 3/4 inch will require some minor dremel work to enlarge the diameter a bit, so it can fit around the valve spring.

the other one was a deep socket, (can't remember the size), with a slot cut in the side. Sorry don't know where the link to that one is right now.

ok i got the snap on tool in the mail today (btw im just gonna go ahead and make my own shim bank and will post up when the thing is done.) but what im still wondering about is how the hell do i measure the valve clearances between the cam lobe and the actual shim. wut tool do i need to measure this??? im getting a micrometer to measure the shims individually but how do i measure the space with the cams in the car?? Hopefully when i get my assortment of shims together i'll be able to sell it as one big kit, w/ shims and all of the tools needed.
