Using fuel filter in oil system?

Hey all.

First off, I wasn't sure if I should post this in General MK3 or the Lubrication SME area. If need be, it can be moved...

On to the question.

I'll be installing a full flow, thermostatically controlled oil cooling circuit soon, and following the template laid out by jdub. I'll be using an accusump tee'd in after the main oil filter, but wanted to filter the oil from the accusump before it hit the engine.

The setup would go as follows.

NA stud --> Canton block adapter (out) --> Canton remote filter head (filter in) --> Mocal thermostat (in from engine)--> oil cooler --> thermostat (to engine) --> remote filter head (filter out to engine) --> tee (accusump on third nipple) --> block adapter (in)

First off, should the oil between the accusump and block be filtered, or am I being overly anal?

Second, if I filter it, can I use a filter designed for fuel, such as Aeromotive, Fuelab, Russell, etc with oil? It would be a -10AN in/out filter...

I realize that oil filters and fuel filters are designed for two different viscosity fluids, but they both do the same job: filter particles.

I'd think that if I used an inline fuel filter rated to roughly the same filtration rating as a standard oil filter, that there would be no harm to flow?

Thanks for any help,
Chris

Some diesel filters go smaller than the normal oil filter. By a lot. Like HEUI injectors. But they were also designed for less viscous fluid as you said. I wouldn't do it.

Moy - Look into Peterson Fluid in line oil filters. They have a stainless steel micron screen inside that you just take out and wash and come in many different micron ratings. They are normally used on dry sump systems but will prob do what you are looking for.

Thanks Rich, I'll definitely look into those.

Too anal about it as it's already being filtered by the real oil filter.

Puffles, it was a rhetorical question

I like Suprarich's idea. You'll most likely see little to nothing with it though, as long as you're using a quality oil filter.

I'll be using a Napa Gold, which I believe is a Wix filter.

For filtration: what level would I want to go with for the oil system?

The media is also not quite as fine...the largest pore size is 58 microns, the smallest is 19 microns.

For the inline filter, post accumulator, would I want a 40 micron filter or 10 micron filter? Those are the two lower options offered by the company suggested by Rich...

I'm still learning, so please bear with me :)
