Upper radiator hose collapsing, BHG?

Ok, so my lil bro was on the way home, decided to get the car washed. He called me saying the coolent light came on, he opened the hood and there was coolent everywhere.
So, we get the car home, fill it back up. Let it run, after about 10 minutes at idle, we saw the upper hose collapse badly, so we knew the coolent had to have come from the overflow.

He just bought this car about a month ago, has run fine with no problems. It has a built and bored bottom end, and a fresh Titan HG and ARP hardware all around. I don't think it could be a hg bc it's freshly rebuilt and botht he block and head were milled flat.
What else could it be?
We are going to get a new hose tomarrow as everything is basically closed today. The hose that was on there wasn't a prebent or OEM hose.

thanks

Did it overheat?

Hmm, actually we didn't take a look. We were all looking at the engine bay for leaks, I gave it a few revs, only about 500RPM over idle if I had to take a guess, then it collapsed, very fast, the entire hose.. It felt extremely weak, it's really thin too.

I'd put a new hose on it, then pressure test the coolant system. Fix any leaks, of course. Look up the threads on here for making your own block tester, do that, and a compression test wouldn't hurt either. GL.

bad hose, radiator cap, and possibly t-stat

radiator cap isn't allowing coolant to be sucked back into the system from the overflow, the hose is old and worn and is collapsing at a lower pressure than it should, and the t-stat could be causing a blockage that causes too much vacuum...

get a new radiator hose at the least, it's quite common for them to wear out like that (or they will ballon instead of collapse)

Yea, he is on his way home with a new hose, luckily we found a parts shop open..
If the new hose collapses again, then should he get a new t-stat and radiator cap?

He is on his way with a new radiator cap and they didn't have the right hose, so he bought a straight piece that is ribbed so it can be bent without kinking.

I'll have an update here soon and let everyone know it's it's overheating and/or collapses.

Also, I did a few searches and turned up no results, reason being I made a thread..

That hose you speak of is very small on the inside, he should be saving for a good hose to replace that if he knows what's good for him ;).

Hmm, I'm kind of a n00b and in another workd today. Mind PMing me the answer to your riddle? or posting it.

Edit: He is gonna get an aluminum replacement eventually but he needs a quick fix bc it's his daily driver.

He needs the proper hose, not a universal hose with a wound wire on the inside of it. That type of hose has a smaller inner diameter than what the stock specs of the supra call for.

I'm not sure what you mean.. If it fit's over the hole, then it would work, right?
How big does the ID need to be? I'll have him check it bc he's still not home so he may still be there..

SS5k: The T Stat is the point of greatest restriction in the cooling system so the hose ID shouldn't be a factor, Donkey Dick Universal hoses just look like shit ;)

I agree, they do.. It's ok though, his whole car is pretty beat but it runs very strong.. It was a NA, then a GTE shortblock was used and built from there.. Still on a W58 though :nono:

A collapsed radiator hose means that the water pump is drawing out coolant, more than the thermostat is allowing back in.

This means that there is a leak in the system, and coolant is going somewhere. This can mean a leak in the hose, or yes, a BHG. A bad radiator cap COULD do this, but a leak where coolant leaks out under pressure, but doesn't necessarily let air back in is the most likely culprit.

so, I knew our luck wouldn't last. I got a phone call from my brother saying the coiled hose we used had cracked... weird..
now I really feel its a bhg. I think the thermostat is working, his blower motor doesn't work so we can't tell using the heater.
the car runs fine and the temp stays low except when the hose collapses (then obviously since no coolent can pass it'll over heat)

I think $2500, the body is ruff..
He has all the recepits and the shop that did the work is the same shop who does work on my car, they are good and verified they did the work.. They are now called Accelerated Performance, they used to be called Defcon Motorsports.

Poodles, I checked it, it was pinched bc he has a massive battery on the thing. Could that be it? We'll see when he drives it...
