Un hooked

While removing the engine from an NA that I was working on, as I had done many times before, I hooked / looped the chain over the lifting hooks of the engine. Everything was going just fine until the engine/trans was over the radiator suport. At which point the chain "rolled" off of the back hook allowing gravity to take over. ^%$%$@$#&*!!!!! The engine was dangling by the front hook and the trans rested on the radiator support. Bent the right headlamp cover. punched a small hole through the bumper and severly tweeked the radiator support. Reletively minor damage considering what could have been.
From then on I ALWAYS bolt the chain to the engine.

Another lesson learned from the school of hard knocks

I never pull the trans with it. You have to keep it at such a sharp angle to clear that it makes me nervous. I doubt the chain would have rolled with just the block. So you suggusting pulling the hooks and bolting the chain to the block where the hooks bolted?

That is the best method for any vehicle actually. I have seen the factory hooks bend open enough to allow the chains to let go also.

Yeah, I have never pulled an engine with hooks before. I have always bolted the chain to the block. I did move my 2J around by the hooks in and out of the van for transport. Reason I am curious is I am pulling a 7M this weekend out of the 92 I just bought.

I have always pulled with the hooks with the tranny attached. Never had a problem but I guess I was just lucky.

i have pulled prolly close to a 100 with the hooks and the tranny attached i just jack the back of the car up and leave the front on the fround the angle allows the tranny to come out level i use the leveler on the hoist its comes right out i am sorry to hear ur misfortune things happen when weight and gravity is involved : (
