something causes too much resistance (either heat, back connection, nick in the wire, or corrosion), and it strats getting warm, the heat then causes more resistance and more heat, that then...

well you get the idea, but that's how it works

Yeah, so make a good ground if you dont want your wires melted!!!

This spot looks suspiciously like it was routed between some dash/body panel that pinched the wires and caused a short.
