Turbo choice for 1JZ

Trying to decide what would be the best turbo for a 1JZ to meet my needs. Looking for good response and around 450rwhp. Looking at either the PT61 kit that MTR offers, only problem is it costs quite a bit... Just came across a website called www.turbokits.com, and I am very interested in the Turbonetics GT-K 650, can pick this and a Tial 44mm gate up for just under $2000, only problems is I have been told that these turbos are very hard to rebuild and I unsure on this site, there prices seem too good to be true...

My final option is just going with the GT35R, but I have been told that both the PT61 and GT-K 650 will spool faster and put down around the same power (both are 0.68 A/R correct?) than the GT35r (with this I would go for 0.82 A/R), and just the fact that every man and his dog has a GT35R powered 1JZ :D.

60-1 / 62-1 are cheap should get you ~ 450whp on pump

I wouldn't go bigger then a 61 though for your goals, anything more will just be laggy

/agree

the GTK are nice turbos though.

but a 62-1 w/ a P-trim will give you great response and a lot of power (at least for a 2jz hehe)

OK
you could try the sc61 turbo... i've seen them go for about 6-700 bucks, they are pretty much just like the gt35, the pt61, and the gt-k 650

Well said, a Borg Warner S362 will do the job as well. You can also look into a Precision GT4082. A PT61 or Garrett T04S (60-1) will easily get the job done. If you have money, look into Because ICan's setup, he's running a SP DBB 61mm with .58 a/r, he made around 420rwhp on pump gas and spooled very quickly. Randy (BecauseICan) stated this: "I also went single while I was at it. I went to the dyno and with a over rich tune it made 368 rwhp at 15 psi, and at 18 psi it made 418 rwhp on 94 octane pump gas. The dyno didnt have the ignition harrness so I couldnt get any TQ readings. This is a wicked turbo for the 1jz, it starts making boost at 2500 rpm and has 18 psi at about 3800 rpm."

T61, by any manufacturer. Good all around turbo for a stock 1j motor. Has done from 350rwhp to 550rwhp in various trims. That should be good enough for most people.

Driftmotion 60-1 is a perfect turbo for a 1jz. It is what I have for my new 1jz project. Great price and very good looking with the polished compressor housing and ceramic coated exhaust housing.

Need some more info - whats your power goals? Where is the car going to be used? Whats under the bonnet? (forged internals, built bottom end or stock?)

Knew I was forgetting something, for now I'm looking for around 450rwhp with room to grow, not sure if its possible but it also needs to be responsive and see ~20psi by 4500rpm, closer to 4000 though :D. For now it will be going on a 1jz with stock bottom end, but I have a 1JZ in need of a rebuild and tossing up between a built 1jz or a 2jzge bottom end.

Thanks for all the replies so far, looks like I have a lot more research to do before I make my decision.

Cams will be done when I start to rebuild the other 1jz or go 1.5jz. I won't be running too much boost until I get everything else done, for now will be quite low boost and a SAFC-II. Once I get a decent standalone I'll look into cams more. I'm also leaning more towards the GT-K 500 or 550 now as they are still capable of putting down 600ish rwhp. Turbonetics claims there HP ratings are underrated.

with room to grow... but how big? whats your ultimate goal with it. A 60-1 will only get like 525, a 61 ~ 550-575, a 63 ~ 575-600 a 67 600-650, etc.. (all on high boost w/ racegas)

Cams, headwork, etc all add a little bit to those numbers
